Why Tire Pressure MATTERS

Proper tire inflation isn’t just about avoiding flats—it’s fundamental to your vehicle’s performance:

Underinflated tires

Worse fuel economy, faster outer tread wear, excess heat buildup, potential blowouts

Overinflated tires

Slightly better fuel economy but faster center tread wear and reduced traction

Properly inflated tires

Optimal tread wear, handling, ride quality, and braking

Key Concept: Volume vs Pressure

Here’s what most people miss: tire support comes from air VOLUME, not just pressure. When you upgrade to larger tires, the factory recommended pressure becomes irrelevant.

Example:

  • A 37×12.50R17 tire supports 2150lbs at 25psi
  • A 42×14.50R17 tire supports 3085lbs at 25psi
  • That’s a 30% difference in load capacity at identical pressure

Using the Calculator

For accurate results, you need:

  1. Your vehicle’s actual front axle weight
  2. Your vehicle’s actual rear axle weight
  3. Tire maximum load (from sidewall)
  4. Tire maximum pressure (from sidewall)

The most accurate weights come from truck scales or recycling centers. If unavailable, use your vehicle’s GVWR from the door jamb (though less precise).

Our calculator includes a 5% safety margin and will generate recommended pressures for both front and rear tires.

Always verify results with the chalk test or infrared temperature readings for optimal performance.
